JULIA WARREN, MD | 2024 PJCCF GRANT RECIPIENT

Dr. Julia Warren, a New Jersey native, completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Chicago before going on to combined MD and PhD training at Washington University in St. Louis. She stayed to complete combined pediatric residency and pediatric hematology/oncology training as part of the Oliver Langenberger Physician-Scientist Training Program at Washington University. There, she studied the role of TP53 mutations in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), often seen in a devastating form of leukemia that develops after cancer therapies. She also defined a new genetic lesion that causes impaired blood cell formation by affecting mitochondrial energy production. She moved to CHOP/University of Pennsylvania in 2022 where she runs a research laboratory focused on both normal and malignant blood cell formation. Dr. Warren also sees patients in the Comprehensive Bone Marrow Failure Center and the Cancer Predisposition Program. She is especially thrilled to be part of a joint clinical working group bringing UPenn adult hematology/oncology physicians together with CHOP doctors interested in genetic changes that increase a patient’s risk for developing leukemia. Her current work aims to target difficult-to-treat AML subsets by using small molecules that target mitochondria-based energy production. The ultimate goal is to develop new therapies that can improve overall survival for patients with leukemia. Dr. Warren is deeply grateful for the support of the Precious Jules Childhood Cancer Foundation in furthering this line of research, and their commitment to supporting the pediatric cancer patient and research community.
